02 · Self-introduction

An engineer learning to read materials

I am a third-year Textile and Materials Engineering student at TAMK with a focus on material testing, textile quality and sustainable material development.

Educational background

I am a third-year Textile and Materials Engineering student at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK), Finland. Through my studies, I have developed an interest in material properties, textile manufacturing, quality management and sustainable material development. My coursework has introduced me to different materials and production processes, while practical assignments have helped me connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. Before TAMK I completed a vocational qualification in hospitality at Tredu and spent my senior high-school year at Timberlake High School in the USA.

Professional interests

My professional interests include material testing, quality control, laboratory work, textile performance and sustainable material development. I am most motivated when theory meets a practical engineering problem, for example when a material property explains why a product performs, or fails, in use.

Professional goals

After graduating, I would like to gain experience in material testing, quality assurance, laboratory analysis or materials development. My goal is to strengthen my technical knowledge, learn industry testing methods and understand how engineers evaluate material performance against quality requirements. In the long term, I hope to contribute to the development of reliable, high-performance and more sustainable materials.

Why I chose textile and materials engineering

I chose this field because I wanted to understand how materials are developed, how their properties affect performance, and how they can be improved for different applications. I am especially interested in the engineering side of textiles, including material testing, laboratory work and quality control. I also value the opportunity to contribute to more sustainable material solutions.

Mission statement

To develop into a skilled and responsible materials engineer who combines scientific knowledge, practical testing and continuous learning to help improve material quality and performance.

Current development goals

I want to continue improving my technical problem-solving, laboratory confidence and ability to analyse and communicate experimental results. I aim to build on my university coursework through practical projects, collaboration and industrial experience. Over three years I have moved from learning what textile materials are to asking how they perform and how that performance can be tested and improved. My strongest results so far are in polymers, composites and smart materials, while mathematics, physics and yarn technology are areas I am actively working to strengthen.
